Financial Literacy and the Moving Ahead Program

Practical Support for a New Beginning

Many people leave harmful or controlling relationships facing money problems they never expected. This can look like lost access to accounts, being prevented from working, pressure to take on debt, or never having the chance to manage finances independently. None of this is your fault. These situations are common, and support is available to help you move forward.

The Moving Ahead Program is a financial education course designed for people who have experienced abuse and need to rebuild their independence. Brighter Tomorrows offers this program to adults at the shelter and to community members seeking clearer guidance and a fresh start.

What the Program Covers

The Moving Ahead Program teaches practical skills that help you understand and manage your finances with more confidence. Topics often include

  • Understanding credit
  • Budgeting and daily money management
  • Banking and saving
  • Handling debt
  • Planning for long-term stability
  • Financial Abuse

Everything is explained in a straightforward way. You do not need to have any financial knowledge before you start. The goal is to give you tools you can use right away.

Why Financial Support Matters

Financial control is one of the most common ways people are trapped in unhealthy relationships. You may have been denied access to money. You may have had accounts opened in your name without your permission. You may have been prevented from working. These experiences can make financial tasks feel overwhelming.

Learning about money in a clear, step-by-step way helps you rebuild independence. It also enables you to understand what is possible, even if your situation feels complicated right now.

How the Program Works

The Moving Ahead Program is offered in person at the shelter and may be available online for those already connected to our services. Sessions are led by trained staff who understand the challenges survivors face. People can ask questions, take their time, and learn at a comfortable pace.

You do not need to share personal financial details unless you choose to. You can participate quietly while you build confidence.
